We are deep into marriage proposal season! Apparently, as per some wedding industry experts, 60% of all engagements occur between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day. I guess it makes sense; a little candlelight and a sparkling beverage and voilà, a rush of romance and a great time to pop the question.
So if you are engaged CONGRATULATIONS! I am in love with love which is probably why I enjoy photographing weddings. Speaking of love, I was stoked when I discovered this very afternoon that I have been given some online "love" from past clients.

I love it when my efforts are recognized and I can give my clients a lasting tribute to an emotional and beautiful day. So here's to love, wherever you find it!

If you got engaged over the Christmas holiday, congratulations! The holiday season is a great time to 'pop' the question and it's no surprise why. The warmth of the season, the sparkle of champagne and the twinkle of the lights all add up to a very romantic time of year. So as you adjust to the new 'ornament' adorning your left hand, let's consider what you need to do now.

1. Select the date. When does it make the most sense to get married? Living in Arizona, we are fortunate to have decent weather most of the year. Sure it gets hot, like oh-my-god-I'm-trapped-in-an-oven hot, but all the venues are heavily air conditioned and a great wedding photographer can get your formal portraits done quickly and get you and your wedding party back inside before anyone starts melting! When considering the date, account for the travel schedules of any important guests. Lastly, a trend I have been seeing the past two years has brides and grooms selecting a date around the availability of their photographer and other vendors they place a priority on. Of course, as a wedding photographer in Arizona, I love to hear that!

2. Prioritize. What is important to you? I recently heard of a couple who placed such importance on wedding photography, they spent 50% of their $13,000 budget to get the photographers they wanted most. Of course, that is an exception but it is important to take some time and determine with you and your groom-to-be consider important. For the most part, the days of each element of the wedding having a set percentage you can spend are over. Spend what you can afford AND on what is important to the two of you. Obviously, photography will last longer than most everything else, so for some it makes sense to allocate a large portion of the budget to a great photographer but not always. Maybe for you, a venue that has personal meaning is worth the most. For someone else, it may be important to have the most unique wedding dress affordable. During the rush of newly-engaged excitement, take time to set your priorities. You should remember that you are making memories as the foundation of a brand new family and nothing can do the better than photographs. I love knowing that the wedding photography I create will help countless couples relive a perfect day, over and over again.

3. Make a list. Consider everything you want for your wedding. Then....go back and make it realistic. =) Once you have that list, start looking for vendors that not only offer a great service or product but vendors that offer an experience unlike any other. For example, any florist can provide you pretty flowers, but find one that "gets" you; one that will partner with you to help you realize the vision you have for your wedding day. The right wedding photographer will not only deliver the wedding photography you want but give you an amazing experience to remember. When working with my couples, I provide them great wedding photography of all the details that went into making their day special and personal.

Whether you have an intimate backyard wedding with just a few friends or throw a lavish affair with a wedding party of 10 on each side, congratulations on your engagement and enjoy this exciting time!

Scottsdale Portrait Photography - Old Hollywood Glamour on Location

Since early November, I have been running in high gear with holiday portraits and a few commercial shoots. All of that leads to a backlog of editing and blog updating getting pushed to the bottom of the priority list. The good news is that holiday orders are almost completely fulfilled and the last set should be delivered tomorrow. What does that mean for you? Not a thing..except that you can enjoy some recent images of the gorgeous Nina D!
We got together just before Thanksgiving to do a shoot for her and her first Dynamite Kid and I was thrilled when she told me we were shooting at the UltraLuxe Theater in Scottsdale. The theme was Old Hollywood glamour which Nina totally rocked! A huge thanks to Tony and the staff for making us feel welcome. Here are a few favorites of mine.

2012 Wedding Trends - Phoenix Wedding Photographer

It is that time of year when we reminisce about the closing year and look forward to the new one. For wedding photographers, this is about the time we start considering all the trends for 2012 weddings. I know for Arizona wedding photographers and others around the US, we are all hoping to see wedding dresses with sleeves a la Duchess Kate or at the very least, like the "Bella" dress from the latest Twilight movie.

As far as colors go, it looks like pink will continue to be popular, but it looks like purple, rich blue and a deep green will be featured prominently at stylish weddings throughout 2012.

Another trend we may see is the trend of very sculptural lines. What does that mean for weddings? Well, it may mean unique, almost avant garde floral arrangements, dresses that have a very defined shape and wedding decor that takes a cue from modern art.

As a wedding photographer for Phoenix, Scottsdale and the surrounding areas, I am excited to see what my brides come up with and how they incorporate the latest design and color trends into their weddings and still manage to put a personal spin on it.

Good gravy!!! I cannot believe it has been 2 months since I posted here! Between launching the new brand of TrueDogPhotography.com, moving, traveling and issues with the blog I have had no time to post recent work.

So let me jump right back into things with some recent shots of Suzie & Scott's wedding. It was gorgeous and fun with perfect weather! The Orange Tree Golf Resort is a lovely place for a wedding with lots of scenic spots for photographs.

Scott and Suzie have a unique love story. They went to high school together and after graduation went their separate ways. Years later they reconnected and the spark that was there ignited into full-on romance. All these years later, they are husband and wife. Their story made me smile and gave me chills. Congratulation to the happy couple!! Here are some of my favorite imagess from the day!

A shout-out to Lynn, the catering director on-site. She did a great job coordinating everything for a lovely wedding at Orange Tree Golf Resort!

Scottdale Engagement Portraits - Arizona Wedding Photographer

Last Sunday, I met Suzie and Scott in Scottsdale to photograph their engagement session. Despite starting our shoot early in the morning, it was hot and humid. You never would have known how uncomfortable it was looking at these images. These two are so in love, it was easy to see just how much and I had the best time photographing them. We laughed a lot and covered a lot of ground at the Scottsdale Civic Plaza, which is a great place for engagement portraits to be made. I am really looking forward to photographing the wedding of these two since they have such a great and interesting love story....which you will have to wait for until I blog image from their wedding. =) Here are a few of my favorites from the session. Arizona Wedding Photographer - Unplugged Weddings

Today's post is a bit different from what I usually do. I am linking to an article that deals with "Unplugged" weddings. Weddings where guests act like guests and witness the romance and true meaning of the marriage ceremony by NOT snapping photos at every turn. Unplugged Weddings
There is a growing resentment among couples who, when looking at their wedding images, wonder why the guests aren't actively witnessing the love and commitment of the couple. Instead, these guests are 'chimping' away on the camera of their cellphones, point & shoot or heavy duty pro-sumer DSLR's. Imagine the disappointment the couple feels when their guests are acting like paparazzi instead of loved and cherished friends.

HopeKids Glamour Event - Mothers and Daughters Celebrated!

I recently had the absolute JOY to photograph posed portraits for the guests of the HopeKids Mother's Day event. Held at Noah's in Chandler, this event gave the ladies a day of glamour with hair and make-up styling and finally a posed portrait by me.
The day was a resounding success, full of smiles and a few tears of happiness. For me, it was a few hours of meeting some amazing mothers and beautiful girls. I was hugged within an inch of my life and I loved every minute of it! I was honored to provide visual memories of a day these children will remember - a day free from the normal stresses of being sick - a day of fun, laughter, glamour and bonding over nothing but girly, frilly things, not illness.

I always love to photograph a person's head shots as it gives me a chance to meet someone new and practice my repertoire of cheesy jokes. Luckily, I have no end of willing victims...er..subjects. A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to meet Kevin on a gorgeous afternoon in Scottsdale. Bridal Fashion Shoot - Veils, Fascinators, Etc.

A week ago I met up with Leah of A Silver Lining to photograph some of her custom veils, fascinators and bridal hairpieces. It was a blustery day with a little rain, chilly temperatures and a LOT of gusty wind. Despite the conditions, I am pleased to report we got what we came for! I would be remiss if I didn't send a HUGE thanks to Jo Ann Grant of Apropos Creations. Jo Ann, thank you for sourcing the models and coordinating the flowers and girls! Arizona Biltmore Wedding Photography - Phoenix Wedding Photographer

New Years Eve was icy by Phoenix standards. In fact, the entire day was windy and bone-chilling. Yet, Kris and Keely braved the elements to share their vows in front of friends, family and the former Prime Minister of Canada, the honorable Jean Chrétien. The Arizona Biltmore is one of the most gorgeous venues in Phoenix and this day was no exception. Bright, blue skies with banks of cottony clouds skating by on the wind, fireplaces ablaze throughout the main building and thousands of white lights twinkling everywhere. Rather than continue to paint a word picture, let me just show you some of my favorite images of the day. Before I do, I must add that Kris and Keely are incredibly warm, gracious and lovely people and I wish them a lifetime of happiness. Plus, the look like a wedding cake topper they are so perfect!

I am trying something new for wedding blog posts, using a storyboard to include lots more images than I normally post. Hope you like them.

Well, we are closing in on the final hours of 2010. I love this time of year and typically, I get all misty at the candy-coated memories I have constructed of events from the past 12 months. Regardless of what the true nature was, I color almost everything with happiness. This year is no different.
2010 has seen some big changes for me, both on the personal front and the business side of things. Connecting with new friends, reconnecting with old friends and being given the honor to photograph some of the best people anywhere, 2010 was a roller-coaster ride! Since I love year-in-review features in magazines and on the news, I thought I would do one myself. I hope you enjoy a small selection of some images from 2010! One of the most enjoyable kids sessions in a long time, little miss C was a total joy! Mature beyond her years, she knew how to work it! Such fun! Here are a few of my favorites from the session. Since we still have very mild fall weather, Miss C wore some spring clothes for her first two wardrobe changes. Love the looks!

Of course, we had to do some Christmas clothes. She really channeled her inner Benneton model here! A little Nordic princess.

Wow, 2 blog posts in a week? I can't stand it! =) After a great week of planning and office organization, I am ready for the weekend. This girl was a joy to photograph. Although quiet, she was funny and sweet. This is why I prefer to use a simple set....it allows the child's personality to come through. No props or gadgets to get in the way.

The little man was all over the place. Silly and energetic, he kept me on my toes. As I was getting ready to add his baby sister into the frame, he stilled and I got this incredibly sweet expression. I love it!

Hello, blog readers! It has been so long since I last posted - over a month, in fact! The past several weeks have seen big changes. A location move, a business overhaul and more! I finally have time to sit down and catch up with posts. Here are some favorites from recent childrens portrait sessions. As usual, I used my high-key set-up, which is my favorite, because it really allows a little one's personality to come out. Each one of these cuties was a blast to photograph, letting me get my silly on!

Wow! I am severely behind posting to the blog! So, let me remedy that with some of my favorite images from Yasco and Jason's wedding celebration!

Sunset, an infinity duck pond and well-wishes from passersby made for a unique and special ceremony.

I love this shot since they look like the perfect bride and groom!

The architecture, neon and color of TCA is gorgeous and really adds some hip, urban flair to a wedding!
It was Yasco's birthday and Jason surprised her with a festive loaf of bread.

Of course, there was cake and it was delicious. =)

When it was time for the exit, guests blew bubbles and while it was a bit breezy, it was a great end to a lovely evening!

Hello, readers! Hard to believe it is almost mid-way through the year, isn't it? To think that 2010 is moving this quickly gives me a headache, so let's talk photography instead. Several weeks ago, I met Kelly and Jim at a local park for some traditional family portraits. It was a gorgeous afternoon and we photographed 3 generations for some really great portraits they can display in their home. At the end of the session, I started to run around with the kids. Even if my client wants traditional portraiture, I always like to build in time to shoot something different. This session, I was able to play with the kids and shoot a series of each boy that I think really represents his spirit. I love the black and white treatment and think it brings out the wisdom of the oldest, the mischievousness of the youngest, the playfulness of the middle and the charm of the 2nd oldest. In case you were wondering....yes, I was tired after running around with 4 active boys and shooting a D3 with a 24-70!

I love the sense of community that exists in my industry! Now, not everyone believes in or supports it, but there are many great photographers that do. In fact, through one of my affiliations I have had the pleasure of getting to know pro photographers from around the world including one with whom I worked a couple Sundays past. An amazing photographer and person, Rogier van Bakel. He is a photographer from Maine who was shooting a wedding for his couple in Scottsdale. I was fortunate enough to connect with him and second shoot the wedding of Rob and Liz. My role was to photograph the guys and details, which was a nice change from main shooter responsibilities. It was an emotional and beautiful day with a wonderful ceremony at a private home in Scottsdale followed by a wedding dinner in Paradise Valley. Here are some of my favorites:

It has been weeks since I updated my blog and to my faithful followers, I am sorry. Mea culpa! Luckily, the reason is nothing more than being busy shooting, editing and designing. Enough with the chit-chat, here is some recent work. You already know I love photographing kids but did you know why high-key is my favorite way to shoot? Well, it is simple. Without distraction of backdrops and props, I can interact with my subjects and really bring out their personalities. It's like we used to say in the corporate world: Keep It Simple, Sweetheart(or something like that =D ).

So excited to unveil the draft of Jill & Aaron's wedding! The day was perfect and I was really pleased to have Sean Egan shooting the groomsmen while I stuck close to the bride and her bridesmaids. Normal albums include 20 sides, but to effectively tell the story of their day I wound up with 50 sides! I made two changes based upon client feedback, but other than that we are ready for production. Enjoy!

After last week's crazy weather and frequent storms, this week dawned sunny and bright. Yesterday was a perfect Arizona winter day and I was so happy to get out and photograph the gorgeous CJ! We met mid-day and had a great session!
So often, I hear from new photographers lamenting about having to shoot when the sun is overhead so here is a tip. Learn to really 'see' the light. Look for lovely light indoors and out and play with the positioning of your subject. I promise, if you do this long enough you will no longer be afraid of shooting when the sun is overhead!Here are 2 of my favorite images from our session:

We met on a sunny day last week in Scottsdale. Right away, I knew we'd become friends. She has an easy laugh, a gorgeous smile and a heart that jumps through the lens. We shot outside in direct sunlight for sometime, then did a wardrobe change and shot inside the library. We were giggling a lot and I am surprised no one 'shushed' us! Have you ever met someone who exudes style in everything she does? That is Kelsey. She was one of my favorite brides of 2009 and probably the most stylish. You may remember images from their wedding and the rockin' hot e-session posted on this blog, but here are some portraits we did in studio. We had talked about doing a trash-the-dress session, but our timing never synched up, so we took to the studio to shoot some formal portraits. I love to take inspiration and put my own take on it. Lately, I have been obsessed with the studio lighting used by Steichen in the 1030's. To put my own spin on it, I kept it very simple using a single light and modifier. Here are a few of my favorites.

Now, I am not to jump on the bandwagon of popular post-processing trends. While I like them, I really prefer to let images speak for themselves. That being stated, I did have fun playing around with this image.

Lastly, I did a conversion on this image to take it back to the turn of the 20th century. One of my favorites in recent memory.

Happy New Year! 2010 is already shaping up to be an amazing year. I kicked it off with a brisk and chilly walk this morning, enjoying the silence and contemplating the coming year. I don't know what the year will bring, but I hope that I have the opportunity to work with clients as wonderful as those of 2009. One of those great clients was Kathy. Her daughter Jamie graduated summa cum-laude from ASU in December. Jamie is smart, sweet and pretty. She will have the world by the tail, I am sure! We documented this wonderful achievement with an outdoor portrait session at Val Vista Lakes. Kathy was able to persuade the rest of the family to sit for portraits as well. In the Spirit of Christmas...

I rarely use my blog for personal things. Instead, I prefer to keep it focused on my photography business but as it is Christmas Eve, I feel like sharing.
The holiday season always seems to bring out the best in people. We seem to be a little more patient, a bit kinder and filled with hope for the new year. 2009 was an interesting and challenging year. I met so many wonderful clients, made some new friends, had a few setbacks along the way and, best of all, became an aunt as my brother and his wife welcomed a son. A joyous event, because we have a new child to whom we can pass along our family history. I wish my grandparents were here to see him, but I know they are watching from heaven and will no doubt be a big part of his life as we share stories about and wisdom from them.
To me, that is what makes Christmas so special, the stories. We see family and old friends and share stories about the past, funny, sad and often embarassing but always wonderful. It is through the gathering of family and friends and the sharing of stories that we create our future.
It in this spirit, as the world looks towards 2010 that I hope we all have a bright and joyous future. One where we are all a little kinder, a bit more patient and eternally hopeful.
Where ever you are, with the family you came from or the family you created, may the blessings of the holiday season find you.

This past Spring I had a great time photographing the kids from Dobson Academy Drama Club. To my delight, I was asked back to photograph the Christmas performance of Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" held late last week. As usual, Mrs. Wilson did a great job of directing and producing. The kids looked adorable and some of them are really talented, too! Here are few of my favorite shots, enjoy!

Family Portrait Session - Scottsdale Family Portraits - Crescendo Photography Portraits

Just before Thanksgiving, I had the pleasure of meeting Yvonne and some of her family for portraits. She is from Michigan and was in town to support her son (and I suspect see the grandbabies) while he competed in the IronMan competition. We shot just outside the grounds to the Scottsdale Hilton, taking advantage of a green patch along a major street. With everyone's timetables we didn't have too long to shoot, but I was pleased with the results. Yvonne is such a lovely woman and truly understands the importance of marking time with portraits. She purchased the rights to her portraits and is having her family photographer in Michigan create her holiday cards with portraits of her other son and his family. Sounds like a nationwide operation to me and I am glad I was part of it!

Wow! I can't believe it has been just a week since I last posted. It seems like months because the busy season is in high gear around here. Shooting, editing, ordering, packaging and delivering I am giving Santa and his elves a run for their money! Here is a recent family session at a pocket park in Ahwatukee. Christin and her family met me early one morning for a mini-session. Since her children are very young, I knew we wouldn't be shooting a ton of posed family portraits. My goal, when working with little kids, is to photograph a few family poses and then chase the kids around while they act like themselves. Most of my clients appreciate. I think is very important to remember your children as they really are, not as you want them to be. From the earliest days, your babies display personality traits that stick with them forever and that is what I want to document. Here is my favorite family shot. Soft light, gorgeous color, perfect!

While photographing the kids, I chased them around the grass onto the playground and back. It made for some really sweet images. Here are two that I think reflect little G and V's personalities perfectly! He is laid back and thoughtful and she is a little firecracker. If you don't think these two are adorable, there is something wrong with you! :D

Family Portraits in the Park - Phoenix Family Portraits - Crescendo Photography Portraits

Autumn is THE season for family portraits in most of Phoenix. The temperatures are bearable and, with any luck, overseeding has taken hold and the parks are green and lush. Such was the case last week for what is probably my favorite family portrait session every year. I have been photographing Kelly and her family for the past 4 years and each time I marvel at how much the girls have changed. K & A are smart, funny and sweet and I cannot believe how grown up they look! Luckily, our session was about 2 weeks later than in past years, which meant we had green grass. BUT, we also had to dodge the sprinklers! Luckily, Kelly brought a blanket.Here are my two favorite famiy portraits from our session

I love to play with the theme of Grant Wood's painting, American Gothic (1930). I frequently conjure up the image when directing my clients. Something about the simplicity of the iconic image inspires me and I enjoy playing with variations of it. Of course, my clients always look happier than the paintings subjects! So, last Friday I had a mini-session marathon for kids in their Halloween costumes. Princesses seemed to be most popular and I wanted to share two of my favorites. Little Misses H & B came as Disney princesses, Cinderella and Snow White. H was perfect as Cinderella!! The hair and dress worked perfectly!

Well, I am actually making progress and catching up on all the project edits, slideshows and albums! This thrills me to no end, because a) I love to check things off my list and 2) I want to share some great shots of a gorgeous couple!
I have the honor of photographing Jill and Aaron's wedding this November and while they already had an engagement session, we hit the studio to play and shoot some more. You may remember their puppy Ruby Love from several posts ago, but here are some hot shots of the soon-to-be Mr. and Mrs.!
I wanted to play with a vintage feel for their session, so I tweaked the color on these. An homage to silver gelatin dry plate processing look of early film days.
After warming up, these two really had a lot of fun. I love it when engaged couples flirt with each other!
Not quite Rita Hayworth and Glen Ford, but close.
An earthier feel to this shot, sort of early 70's, soft and sexy.
Of course, I had to include one more of baby Ruby Love!

I am finally getting caught up on my blogposts! In late August, two of my favorite clients, Tammy and Adam, were married at Ocotillo Country Club. The setting was gorgeous, the skies perfect and the couple adorable. Surrounded by friends and family, these two became Mr. & Mrs. and had a party to rival the best of them! Tammy's dress was simple and stunning, perfect for her!
Since they opted for a first-look session before the wedding I was able to take advantage of natural light for some lovely portraits.

Some may say the bridal pyramid is played out, but I think it is perfect to showcase the playful spirit of Tammy and Adam!

Wow! Has it really been 2 weeks since I blogged last? Where does the time go?
Well, anyway, we are here now so let's catch up! After a recent session, I coerced, corraled and otherwise threatened my assistant in front of the camera. Meet Kristy! You know when you meet someone and you instantly feel a kinship? That's how it was for me when I met this funny, intelligent and very tolerant girl. She has assisted me on several weddings and portrait sessions and takes wonderful care of me. Additionally, she keeps me from getting all uppity, which is a feat for anyone! At this point, I consider her a dear friend. I was so happy to have a chance to photograph her. Here are some of my favorite shots from our 'play date'!

Chandler Wedding - Wedding at Ashley Manor - Weddings by Crescendo Photography

I am behind on blogging and apologize to those of you who visit regularly! Thankfully, I am behind because I am busy shooting and editing - all of which makes me delirously happy and often just plain delirious! Thank you for your patience and away we go!

Two weeks ago I shot a lovely wedding at Ashley Manor in Chandler. As it is monsoon season in Arizona, there was a chance of storms. While the rain held, we were beset with wind. Lots of wind. In fact, during the processional the gusts were so fierce I thought the flowers girls would blow away! Despite that, the gorgeous fete of Corynne and Keith went off without a hitch! Enjoy some of my favorites from the day:
Ashley Manor always does such a lovely job of decorating!

The dress was stunning! Fit for a princess with bodice crystals and pick-ups across the train.

Corynne chose to have both her 'dads' walk her down the aisle and it made for some lovely emotion.

Kids add so much to wedding celebrations. You never know what they will do and that makes for some fun shots!

Cory and Keith wrote their own vows and both were incredibly heartfelt.

When Erica, the brides sister and MOH, sang during the sand ceremony I caught this image between the huge candlesticks decorating the patio. There is something I love about this somewhat hidden moment.

Aren't they adorable? Cory and Keith look like illustrations for a perfect wedding couple!
I had fun creating this homage to old tintype portraits and the ladies gave me great material to work with!

The toasts were great and I think the whole place got misty.

Scottsdale Wedding - Wedding at the Sanctuary - Weddings by Crescendo Photography

If you read my blog with any regularity, you know a) how hot it is in Arizona and b) that I shot 2 weddings last Friday. This is VERY unusual, as I devote my heart and soul to each wedding and would normally not split my attentions. However, as it worked out both couples opted for versions of my abbreviated coverage and I was able to shoot an intimate, beautiful wedding in the morning at Scottsdale's Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain for Renae and Diego. I could wax poetic, but I will just post some images and let you enjoy...with only minor commentary :)

The shoes were Chanel (ooo la la!) and the dress was a little retro piece of heaven!

That is why I love what I do...pure emotion caught forever.

Despite this being abbreviated coverage, I shot a ton of frames and really enjoyed "funkifying" some of the images. For this image I wanted to isolate the bridal couple. They were just married and in a little love bubble, I don't even think they knew I was there!

We scouted this settee that I knew would be perfect for some newlywed canoodling!

I had a lot of fun playing with light during this wedding, as evidenced above.

The vows were said, the rings exchanged, the cake was cut and now it's time for happily ever after!. A huge shout out to Victoria at Sanctuary for being so easy to work with, Kristy my amazing assistant who not only lights for me, but keeps me hydrated and to Renae and Diego - thank you so much for the honor of photographing your wedding. !Felicitaciones!

Scottsdale Portrait Session - Arizona Professional Portraits - Crescendo Photography

Last week, during one of several heat advisory days, I had the pleasure to photograph Mark. Since it was 'hot as an oven', I decided to shoot in the lower stairwell of the library and save both of us [mostly me!]the chance of heatstroke. Something I get asked a lot is how much gear I take with me on my location sessions and the answer is, almost all of it because you just never know. With that being said, I prefer to use really simple set ups. One light and a modifier, or in the case of these images, simply a reflector mounted to a stand. For personal portraits, I really like to keep the technical side simple so as to put the focus on the subject. With Mark, I just wanted to highlight his eyes and capture his natural relaxed charm. If I do say so myself, I think I did just that! Enjoy!

Well, I had planned to wait until tomorrow to post more of Avery's birthday session, but since I have the incredibly rare occurence of shooting 2 weddings tomorrow, I wanted to post this evening. By the way, both weddings are short and spaced 5 hours apart....just so you don't think I can/would shoot back to back. Come on, I may be crazy but I'm NOT insane!

Back to the session. Normally, my one year old clients get excited about cake. They taste it, shove their hands in it and many times smush their faces in it. Not this little miss! First shot, everything is great. Balloons, pink everywhere. Cool, right?
No. Not cool. I think she thought "What the heck is this? They know I don't eat SUGAR!"

I laughed so hard at her reactions to the cake. I have never seen such antipathy for sugar, as this! It was adorable the way she reacted and never took to the cake. I think her dad wound up eating it!

This shot ranks up in the top 5 images I have ever taken. I love her gummy, spitty smile. It is an image like this that reminds me how incredibly lucky I am to do what I do. Bearing witness to all this joy and creating a lasting memory for her family. Sigh. Life is good.

Incidentally, no enhancement was done to her eye color...they really are navy blue!

I was honored to photograph Avery for her first birthday. Obviously, we shot in the studio and it may be impossible for a baby to be any more precious. This is the first of 2 posts, since I want to drag out the 'adorable' as long as I can.

Tammy dressed her perfectly, and a girl knows when she looks good, right?

For some time, I have been playing with conversions and effect to replicate the look of childrens portraits from the 1950's. I think this comes pretty close. Next time, I will hand tint the cheeks!

Scottsdale Portrait Session - Arizona Professional Portraits - Crescendo Photography

Last week, the Arizona summer set upon us with a vengance. I am pretty sure the balmy days of the high 90's are gone until October. In fact, 2 of the days on which I shot last week were classified as extreme heat advisory days which always adds an element of torture to even the most lovely of sessions. I could have insisted that my clients come to Chandler and shoot in studio, but as I try to make sessions as easy as possible I selected a Scottsdale location, which was closer for each client. Which brings me to the point of this post. Just because you may be limited in shooting locations, doesn't mean you can't make your sessions look different. Case in point, all three of these lovely ladies were photographed in the same location, about 15 steps in either direction. By using what was available, we end up with different looks for each one.

Learn to 'see' what is around you and you may be surprised with what you find!

A little over a week ago, I met Mary Ellen and her family at a local park for their portrait session and I had a blast! Mary Ellen and Rick are lots of fun and really laid back, cool people. Their kids, the awesome Miss M and rugged little man R, were adorable and really patient as I made them run around, sit still and swing :) The kids are gorgeous and each one has such a sweet personality! Then I did the unspeakable and asked sissy to sit next to her bubba!!! But, they agreed for about 5 seconds and I managed to get this shot.

I am always looking for things that will appeal to my clients and lately I have been playing with storyboards as an alternative to several separate portraits. Here is a quickie monogrammed 4-shot of the kids.

Last week...I think it was last week, my days have congealed into early-2009 or mid-2009, I had the great pleasure of photographing two clilent while in Scottsdale. Lisa and I shot at 10am and she brought her little dog! I love it when I can work my canine mojo :). Kim and I shot at noon and by then it was steamy, sticky and darned uncomfortable. Somehow, Kim didn't show any reaction to the heat, while I was about as crisp as a wet dish towel. I think she may be an alien :D

Okay, I am getting caught up on my editing and while I am not finished with this June20th wedding, I did manage to pull out some of my favorite images! Kelsey and Tyler were married in Fountain Hills on a gorgeous late Spring evening. It was a standing-room-only ceremony full of love, laughter and tears. Kelsey may be the most creative/talented bride ever! All the special touches she put into the day were amazing - from the paper cake to the custom bouquets to the centerpieces, she must have worked her tail off! Here are some of my favorite images from the day:

Kelsey MADE this cake from paper!! Amazing, I say! The dress was so beautiful and had a lovely creamy sheen. I like how it looks like a living, breathing element to the day haning on this rack, just waiting to make its debut!

These 2 shots were taken in the respective suites of the bride and the groom. I love how it looks like they are looking at each other <3
The couple opted for a "first look" session before the ceremony and it was a really special moment for them, I think. The shot on the left is just before Tyler turns to see Kelsey and the shot on the right is his reaction.

It was a packed room, so I had to shoot between peoples shoulders...I think it works well for this shot of Kelsey coming to the altar. I love the look on her dad's face!

The newlywed's first dance where Tyler serenaded his wife. Kelsey's grandparents have been married more than 60 years, I believe and were so adorable to watch, especially as they danced. I love Kelsey hiding behind the napkin :)

Late last week I had the pleasure of photographing Dr. Colleen Huber for her web site and marketing collateral. It was a relaxed environmental portrait session at her home and we were able to take advantage of her art work indoors and backyard landscaping for a variety of surroundings. Dr. Huber is a naturopathic medical doctor with a private practice and impressive list of publishing credits. As I am interested in holistic healthcare, you can be sure I peppered her with questions and she obligingly answered them all :) Here are my favorites from the session:

Last week I had the pleasure of perfect weather, glowy afternoon light and a great client! Crystal met me in downtown Chandler for a mini-session and we were able to take advantage of a lovely outdoor setting near the studio. She was so easy to work with and a lot of fun! With her dark eyes and porcelain skin, I think she looks like a cross between Danica McKellar (Winnie from the Wonder Years) and Natalie Portman. Here are my favorites:

Last week, one of my clients had to bring his kids to his session. As they were sweet, funny and really well behaved it was no problem at all. In fact, when I heard the distant bells of the ice cream truck, I took the kids over to select an icy summer treat! The choices were telling - a bomb pop for the boy and a chocolate fudgesicle for the girl. Too cute! I was so enamored with these two cuties I fired off 1 frame each. Not bad for guerilla shooting, huh?

Since returning from Mexico I have been fortunate enough to continue booking sessions during a typically slow time of year. Why? Maybe my constant stream of positive thoughts is working! Sunday was a busy day with 3 sessions! Just after lunch, I was back in Chandler and photographed Sheldon. He certainly let me put him through the paces of a model! Different clothes, poses, locations...all of it and he never complained! Here are 2 of my favorites from his session.

Well, I am back from Mexico and in the groove of sessions, editing, order fulfillment and everything else. My trip was great, but a few days too short! Nonetheless, it is good to be home and I am pleased to announce that I only have 1 session date left for June and 5 left for July. If you need a session, please call me ASAP to reserve your date!

Now, onto the fun stuff! Yesterday, I had the pleasure of heading to Scottsdale to photograph Karen. We shot at the Civic Plaza Park and I was so happy with the natural glow-y light we had at 11am. The temperature was a pleasant 93, and the foliage was in peak form! Here are my 2 favorites from our session....I think she really looks like the actress Kathleen Quinlan
